Moving Violations and Point Assessments
 
When you are convicted of a Virginia driving law violation, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will post the conviction to your driving record, assign you demerit points according to the severity of the offense, and notify your insurance company upon request. If applicable, they will also issue an order of suspension and/or issue an order requiring the successful completion of a driver improvement clinic.
 
The following lists present Virginia driving law violations that have demerit points.
