When alcohol is absorbed into the bloodstream, it is not
chemically changed. When a person exhales, the alcohol in
their blood passes lung’s air sacs (alveoli) and into
the air. Since alcohol evaporates, it can then be measured
in the air exhaled from the lungs.
The alcohol concentration in the breath is related to the
alcohol concentration in the blood. The ratio of alcohol in
a person’s breath to that in their blood is 2,100:1—2,100
ml of air contain the same amount of alcohol as 1ml of blood.
In Virginia, the legal standard for drunkenness is 0.08 grams
of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
